Victory supports lawsuit against governor’s unconstitutional actions

LANSING, Mich. — After Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and House Speaker Lee Chatfield on Wednesday announced a joint legislative lawsuit against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for failing to comply with existing state law and disregarding the Michigan Constitution, Sen. Roger Victory, R-Hudsonville, issued the following statement:

“The hardworking folks of Ottawa County and our entire state deserve a voice – through their elected legislators – on the critical actions and decisions made by their government, especially those that affect their everyday lives and livelihoods.

“The state law clearly says the governor needs legislative approval to extend an emergency declaration, and we tried to work with her on a reasonable solution that would protect Michigan families, increase needed transparency with the public, and begin safely reopening our state through the constitutional process.

“I support this lawsuit as an unfortunate but necessary action to defend the Michigan people, our co-equal branch of government and the rule of law.”
